Hayman is the most northerly of the famous Whitsunday Island group; the resort is located on the southerly shore of the privately-owned 294-hectare island. The extensive low-rise facilities are scattered among 14 hectares of tropical gardens and front a sweeping stretch of sandy beach. Beyond the beach lies an 800-metre-wide sand flat with a fringe of coral reef that is exposed at low tide. Hayman's flora is diverse, and a variety of birds inhabit the island, including white cockatoos, painted lorikeets, kookaburras, stone curlews, and kingfishers.
From May to November, butterflies swarm the shaded gullies, and there is a year-round resident colony of Proserpine rock wallabies. From May through to August, humpback whales are a familiar sight, and the crystal clear waters surrounding the island are also home to a kaleidoscope of coloured coral and tropical fish.
