Hotel Information: Built in the 1960s as part of a stylish mixed-use complex, the Watergate attracts international dignitaries and well-heeled travelers. The fragrance of fresh flowers fills the long, gleaming marble lobby. The complex became infamous in the early 1970s when President Richard Nixon’s re-election team broke into the Democratic Party headquarters next to the hotel.
Amenity highlights: Aquarelle, the hotel’s contemporary restaurant, serves Mediterranean cuisine accompanied by superb views of the Potomac River. Cocktails are served in the split-level Potomac Lounge.

All are appointed with antique-reproduction furnishings, including desks, easy chairs with ottomans, and porcelain lamps. Beds are topped with quilted bedspreads and throw pillows. Art Nouveau prints decorate the walls.

Rock Creek Park, two blocks northwest of The Watergate Hotel, is a 1,800-acre oasis with hiking and biking trails, a nature center/planetarium, remnants of Civil War forts, and an 18-hole public golf course. Trail rides are available through the Rock Creek Park Horse Center. The park has 15 soft-surface and 10 hard-surface tennis courts; reservations are generally required. The hotel’s concierge can arrange bicycle rentals.
Mountain bikers pedal along the C&O Canal towpath, which begins six blocks west of the hotel in Georgetown.
