Hotel Information: The only inn in the nation’s capital listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Morrison Clark Hotel gives guests the chance to travel back in time. Antique photos and etchings line the walls, and a turn-of-the-century Sears kit clock overlooks the front desk.
Amenity highlights: Many guestrooms are individually appointed with Victorian furnishings, original artwork, balconies or bay windows, and decorative fireplaces. All rooms feature marble bathrooms and unique touches such as complimentary roasted pecans in each room.
Insider tip: Built in 1864 as townhouses for two of Washington’s leading families, the Morrison Clark Hotel was converted in 1923 into inexpensive lodgings for members of the armed services. First Ladies beginning with Grace Coolidge presided over the facility, hosting teas there to raise money for its operations. Photographs of the soldiers and sailors who ate and slept in the facility line the walls, as well as photos of Jacqueline Kennedy, who took a special interest in the club.
