Travel Details

Hotel Monticello of Georgetown

Hotel Information: This Washington boutique hotel offers a prime location in historic Georgetown. The peaceful C&O (Chesapeake & Ohio) Canal is a half-block south. M Street, with its world-class shopping, lively pubs, and wide range of restaurants, is a half-block north. The Monticello is particularly attractive to business travelers who enjoy mixing a little shopping and sightseeing with their work. Guests appreciate the Monticello's intimate scale and unpretentious ambience. A large portion of clientele are repeat guests.

Amenity highlights: Although built in the 1960s, this renovated redbrick hotel blends harmoniously with the 18th- and 19th-century townhouses that surround it. Gleaming brass chandeliers and reproduction antiques accent the small, Federal-style lobby, which itself has a townhouse feel. The lobby is the setting for the complimentary Continental breakfast.

Insider tip: A half-block from the hotel, the garden adjoining the Old Stone House provides a calming retreat from the M Street scene. It's a lovely setting for a picnic (perhaps with goodies from the nearby Dean & DeLuca gourmet grocer). The house itself, built in 1765, is the oldest in the city that is still in its original location; it's open to visitors several days a week.

Rooms

The Monticello's 47 apartment-style guestrooms range in size from 500 to 600 square feet. Rooms feature 18th-century antique reproduction furniture. Pillow-top beds are dressed in Egyptian cotton triple sheeting, duvets, and down/goose-feather pillows. Wireless Internet access is complimentary.

Marble bathrooms are equipped with makeup mirrors, phones, and Hermès toiletries. All rooms have kitchenettes with mini-fridges, wet bars, microwaves, and coffeemakers. Terry-cloth bathrobes are provided, as are complimentary newspapers and shoeshines.

Artwork depicts Thomas Jefferson and his Monticello home. Windows open; views are generally of Georgetown's historic buildings and picturesque peaked roofs.

The towpath along the 19th-century C&O Canal is popular for walking and jogging. Access is a half-block from the hotel. Spring through fall, mule-drawn barge rides provide a novel way to enjoy the scenery. During those months, the mules are stationed right by the canal—and are eminently pettable. Canoes are also available for rent.

Just north of busy M Street, tree-lined residential streets invite leisurely strolls past stately old townhouses and mansions. For a good walk that embraces both the quiet and bustle of Georgetown, guests can head north on 31st Street NW (2 blocks from the hotel). Stop by Tudor Place, a historic manor with exquisite gardens. A few blocks farther is the Dumbarton Oaks estate, where brick-paved paths wind through lavish floral displays, statuary, fountains, and pools. The route continues west on R Street NW, then south to lively Wisconsin Avenue, with its shops, antiques dealers, and cafés. At the foot of Wisconsin is the Potomac waterfront and the glitzy Washington Harbour development, with views of the Kennedy Center and the Watergate complex. The hotel is about 2 blocks away.
