Hotel Information: Opened in March of 2003, the resort offers tranquil seclusion between turquoise-and-blue sea and low green hills. Rest-and-relaxation is the theme, symbolized by classical background music playing in a two-story lobby offering a tropical-Spanish decor of coral-stone floor and wood accents.

Amenity highlights: Wood stairways lead down a 10-foot bluff to two beaches, one 100 yards long and the other 70 yards, providing swimming and sunbathing opportunities as well as views of Culebra island and the main Puerto Rico island to the north. Some days, St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands can also be seen on the horizon. Those views are also available from the two-level pool complex, whose lower level includes a shallow children's section. The upper level features two infinity edges flanking a swim-up bar. Martineau Bay Resort and Spa offers 156 extra-large guestrooms in 17 yellow buildings of two and three stories without elevators.

Each room includes a patio or balcony furnished with two cushioned teak chairs and footstools. All-white rooms have terra-cotta tile floors with straw mats and combine Spanish-style furnishings such as antiqued armoires and dining sets with tropical touches such as bamboo reading chairs and bamboo floor lamps. Wood-paddle ceiling fans and louvered sliding patio/balcony doors provide a cooling option to rooms' air conditioning.
