Hotel Information: Opened in 2004, the hotel attracts an international clientele of leisure and business travelers as well as Venetians drawn by the hotel's restaurant, outdoor dining terrace with its panoramic Grand Canal view, and grand reception and meeting rooms in the restored 17th-century palazzo around which the hotel was built.
Amenity highlights: So magnificent is the view of Grand Canal boat traffic, the 17th-century Santa Maria della Salute domed church, and the entire St. Mark's Basin, that year-round hotel guests and Venetians gather at the canalside terrace tables fronting the hotel's restaurant and bar for espresso, snacks, and meals. In summer, crowds linger long into the night.
Insider tip: The 17th-century palazzo at the hotel's core was owned by a noble family that permitted Venice's first casino to open there in 1638. Authorities closed the casino in 1774 as a menace to public morals and noble-family wealth. Later it operated as a theater, until, combined with adjacent 19th-century buildings, it was converted into the present hotel.

Recreation
The Lido of Venice, the slender, 11.5-km-long (7.25-mile) island facing the Adriatic Sea that lies a 15-minute waterbus ride east of central Venice, is the city's playground, especially in summer when beaches and water sports draw visitors and Venetians. Year-round, visitors rent bicycles to explore the island, play golf, or take horseback rides. Aside from fishing in the canals, the central city offers little in the way of recreational opportunities. Deep-sea fishing is available in the Adriatic Sea.

Property Amenities
Spacious and quiet, the Hotel Monaco & Grand Canal (A Summit Hotel)lobby exemplifies the hotel's blend of contemporary and traditional. An enclosed entrance courtyard contains columns and a molded ceiling, while elevators display a Renaissance-era Grand Canal scene. Two conversation/reading areas include bookshelves, a glass ceiling, a glass-enclosed garden, a classic Italian wellhead, plentiful potted greenery, a collection of rustic artisan's stools, and mosaic-tile panels created by a noted Italian artist.
Open for guests to explore when they are not being used for parties and meetings, the restored Sala del Ridotto (assembly room) and eight salons surrounding it glow with color, frescoes, marbles, mirrors, and stucco moldings--all virtually indistinguishable from the original 17th-century palazzo's rooms that were depicted in many treasured Venetian paintings.
A lobby computer provides high-speed Internet access (surcharge). The hotel staff speak fluent English.
