Gabrielli Sandwirth Hotel

Hotel Information: Converted from a 14th-century palazzo, the Gabrielli Sandwirth has been a hotel since 1856, welcoming guests from Franz Kafka to German chancellor Helmut Schroeder. The lobby features floor-to-ceiling marble, a painted, beamed ceiling, and wooden telephone cabins. Adjacent is a quiet lounge area with tall windows overlooking the waterfront and large library-style reading tables.

Amenity highlights: On the hotel's rooftop terrace are sun loungers, tables and chairs, offering some of the finest views in Venice, from the Doge’s Palace to the Biennale Gardens and way out into the lagoon. Most unusual in a Venetian hotel is its large garden, with palms, cedars of Lebanon, roses, pergolas, and aquatic plants in stone basins. In summer, the courtyard is used for breakfast and candlelit dining.

Insider tip: Venice is not known for its greenery but, in addition to the hotel’s own gardens, the Biennale Gardens are a relatively short stroll (650 metres). The cutting-edge Venice Biennale art exhibition is held here every two years (odd years). A permanent fixture is a tall, blue-lit sculpture on the waterfront, said to have been inspired by the shape of the Venetian gondola.

The Gabrielli Sandwirth Hotel, Venice, features 105 guestrooms over five floors. Rooms are furnished and decorated in traditional Venetian style, with dark wood beds and dressing tables. Guests of the Gabrielli Sandwirth enjoy a complimentary hot and cold buffet breakfast each morning, served either in restaurant or in the courtyard, weather permitting.

Corte Gabrielli Restaurant - Offers romantic dining in the terracotta painted courtyard beneath trees. In the evenings tables are candlelit and the trees are hung with lanterns. In cooler weather, meals are served in the traditionally-decorated dining room featuring large Murano glass chandeliers. Serves typical Venetian cuisine with fish specialities. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

American Bar - Serves cocktails throughout the day. Retro style decor with polychrome marble walls. Drinks and snacks also served outside on the waterfront terrace.
