Hotel Information: The Foscari Palace was converted into a hotel from Venice’s German consulate in 2004. Guests arriving by water taxi enter the hotel through its original wrought iron gates, the 16th-century palazzo origins evident inside the cool marble foyer with pink columns and an original painted beamed ceiling. Brown leather sofas, black-and-white etchings and pot plants contribute to a soothing atmosphere.
Amenity highlights: Guests can relax in the elegant lounge which combines five centuries of interior decor. Drinks are available by waiter-service on the roof terrace which offers views of the Rialto Market, the Grand Canal and a classic Venetian roofscape across to St Marks’s Square.
Insider tip: If you want to ride in a gondola without paying a small fortune, forsake a ride along the Grand Canal for a traghetto (gondola ferry) trip across it - for just 50 cents. As there are only three bridges across the Grand Canal, a traghetto can dramatically reduce journey times. However, they stop early evening (times posted), which might mean a long walk, or water taxi, back to your hotel.
