Hotel Information: Set on a very narrow alleyway, the façade of the Best Western is modern and unassuming, though property itself was built in the 17th-century and has been a convent and a palazzo. Two antique, near life-size Moorish statues bearing torches provide a traditional welcome at the doorway. A large antique-style glass map of Venice covers most of one side wall of the small marble lobby.
Amenity highlights: The hotel’s proximity to Saint Mark’s Square means that some guestrooms have remarkable views of the roof of the basilica and its adjacent historic buildings. Complimentary hot and cold buffet breakfast is served in a small but grand breakfast room with fabric-covered walls, matching chairs, and Murano glass lighting and mirrors.
Insider tip: The clock bell that can be heard from the hotel’s upper rooms on the hour belongs to the Torre dell’Orologio, the much-photographed clock tower of Saint Mark’s Square. Its bell is struck with hammers by two near-life-size 15th-century bronze figures. The base of the tower is a traditional meeting point for Venetians.
