Travel Details

Chenay Bay Beach Resort

Hotel Information: Overseen by a Canadian owner who lives on the property, the Chenay Bay Beach Resort occupies the site of a former plantation and includes a 19th-century stone windmill tower and lime kiln. Dense flowering gardens and shade trees surround the cottages. Families come for casual peace-and-quiet vacations. Staff members are warm and friendly.

Amenity highlights: Near one end of the beach, guests snorkel in rock troughs that are home to a five-foot eagle ray. Guests also kayak to an offshore island for swimming and collecting conch shells. A sundeck around the L-shaped pool provides sweeping views of the sea. At one end of the deck, a lattice-work gazebo draped by bougainvillea shelters a spa tub. The resort’s restaurant features a Saturday-night pig-roast buffet with a West Indian show.

Insider tip: During their May–November nesting season, hawksbill and leatherback sea turtles lay eggs at one end of the resort's beachfront.

The Chenay Bay Beach Resort offers 50 guestrooms in 35 one-story, pastel-wood, West-Indian–style cottages. The cottages are arrayed on low slopes amid trees and flowering gardens. Each high-ceilinged room has its own covered unfinished-wood porch with outdoor furniture.

Fully equipped kitchenettes include two-burner cooktops, microwave ovens, and full-sized refrigerators. Decor includes mahogany blinds, silk plants, fresh blossoms, rattan or mahogany furniture (including two-chair dining sets), and local artwork.

Recreation

An L-shaped pool above the beach measures 50 feet on one side and 32 feet on the other. A lattice-work gazebo draped by bougainvillea shelters a four-person spa tub. Lights adjacent to the pool and spa tub permit 24-hour use.

The resort is set on a one-mile beach along Chenay Bay. Less than a mile offshore, a nature-preserve island called Green Cay shelters the bay, ensuring calm water in most weather. Guests paddle to the island in complimentary kayaks for swimming off a beach and collecting conch shells discarded by commercial fishers.

Near one end of the resort's beach, guests use complimentary snorkeling gear to explore rock troughs that constitute one of the North Shore's prime snorkeling sites. The troughs' marine life includes a resident five-foot eagle ray who often can be seen jumping out of the water in the mornings.

The other end of the resort's beach abuts a nature/bird preserve, home to a mangrove pond where guests can fish for tarpon (equipment not provided). Guests also can fish off the point for rock fish. Deep-sea fishing charters are available at a marina one mile away.

A water-sports center on the Christiansted waterfront three miles west of the resort offers snorkeling excursions to Buck Island Reef National Monument. Dive centers in Christiansted offer scuba and kayaking excursions to Salt River Bay National Park & Ecological Preserve.

Use of the resort's small sailboats, pedal boats, lawn volleyball court, and two tennis courts with a basketball hoop is complimentary.

The 18-hole Buccaneer Golf Course is 1.5 miles west of the resort, and the 9-hole Reef Golf Course is 3.5 miles east.
