Hotel New Otani Tokyo

Hotel Information: Set against the backdrop of a 400-year-old garden, originally home to samurai lord Kiyomasa Kato (1562-1611), Hotel New Otani Tokyo is a community unto itself. Comprising three buildings—Main, Tower, and Garden Court—it holds 1,533 guestrooms, 34 dining venues, and scores of shops and conference/function rooms. Its varied clientele, including the likes of Bill Clinton and other international notables, reflects the hotel’s ability to cater to nearly every traveler.

Insider tip: A small shop located near the Garden Court building on the hotel side of Benkei Bridge, which leads to Akasaka, offers rowboats for hire. Anyone looking for a chance to escape from the city for a bit can take a watery journey on the moat winding along the back side of the hotel’s garden.

Getting there: Rental cars are not recommended for travelers unfamiliar with this area. Getting around: For visitors, driving in Tokyo can be a confusing and crowded experience and is not recommended. Taxis are available at nearly every street corner and at designated ranks outside rail stations and in major centers; fares can be costly (most start at JPY660/US$5–$10 and increase from there). The Hotel New Otani offers a complimentary shuttle bus to select business districts. Shuttles leave from the main building banquet floor on weekdays. Otherwise, trains and subways are the most efficient and economical modes of transportation and are relatively easy to navigate, but get very busy during peak times (mornings and early evenings). The city’s 13 lines are all color coded and include bilingual signs and maps. Cars operate from around 5 AM until midnight; fares start at JPY160 (US$2). Akasakamitsuke (Marunouchi/Ginza lines) and Nagatacho Station (Hanzomon line) subway stations are within walking distance (approximately 300 meters/yards) of both the Tower and Garden Court buildings, as is the Akasaka dining/entertainment area (approximately 500 meters/yards). The bus system is not as easily navigable, particularly for travelers who cannot decipher the Japanese signage. All fees subject to change without notice.
