Hotel Information: Commissioned by the Imperial Palace in 1890 as the first European-style hotel in Japan, this landmark has seen generations of famous figures (Babe Ruth among them) pass through its doors, survived World War II, and currently is on its third structure. The 1923, Frank Lloyd Wright–designed version outlasted the Great Kanto Earthquake, which struck the day after its re-opening. Today’s two-building hotel still hosts politicians, holidaymakers, business guests, and sightseers who wouldn’t visit Tokyo without stopping in for a look.
Amenity highlights: The hotel’s two buildings house an extensive array of services, stores, event facilities, and dining/drinking venues. By day, guests can be found browsing through the high-end boutiques of the shopping arcade, sipping tea in the lobby-area lounge, working in the executive center, or simply enjoying the serenity of the Japanese garden. The 13 restaurants offer everything from Pacific-Coast Western to traditional Japanese cuisine. The signature bar features a Marilyn Monroe–inspired drink, while a top-floor lounge tempts with views of Hibiya Park and evenings of live music.
Insider tip: The hotel is just opposite Takarazuka Theater, which features plays and musicals performed by a cast composed entirely of women. Otokoyaku actresses take male roles in romance-themed plays that have proven quite popular with the locals.

The hotel also offers limousine sightseeing and transportation services (surcharges). The city’s 13 lines are all color-coded and include bilingual signs and maps. Cars operate from around 5 AM to midnight; fares start at JPY160 (US$2). Hibaya and Ginza subway stations are within walking distance (approximately five blocks) of the hotel, and Tokyo Central Station (trains) is 1 km (0.5 mile) away. The bus system is not as easily navigable, particularly for travelers who cannot decipher the Japanese signage, but a bus stop sits just outside the hotel’s main entrance. All fees subject to change without notice.
