Lantau Island: Big Buddha and Tai O Walking Tour
More than half of this large island is dedicated Country Park area, which is home to numerous monasteries as well as the Big Buddha—an 85-foot-high (26-meter-high) bronze statue. Choose from a mountain or valley walk.
Lantau Island
Lantau is the largest island in the Hong Kong SAR, and was the least developed until recently. Over the past 100 years, numerous monasteries have been established on Lantau, including the Po Lin Monastery and the associated Big Buddha.
Po Lin Monastery and Big Buddha
The Po Lin (Precious Lotus) Monastery—the largest and best-known on Lantau Island—was created by three Zen masters in 1920 as a small stone hut shrine dedicated to Buddha. Enjoy a walk through the beautiful monastery grounds and along the Ngong Ping Plateau. From there, you will climb up to the Big Buddha, one of the most distinctive landmarks in this area. The large bronze statue greets you, right hand raised to deliver a blessing to all who make the trek.
Tai O
From the monastery, you’ll head to Tai O, a small fishing village where it seems time has stood still since the Qing, Ming, or even Yuan dynasties. Depending on your tour (mountain route or valley route), you will follow the Lantau Trail over the Keung Shan Mountains or you will head into the Keung Shen Valley and then to the village.
The walk
Full-day walks usually entail 2 to 6 hours of walking, plus time to get to and from the departure location at the Star Ferry concourse. Full-day hikes tend to go to more remote areas, hence the longer walking time. You are advised to bring sunscreen and insect repellant, and to wear a hat and comfortable walking shoes; sandals and open-toe shoes are not recommended.
