Bangkok’s Palaces and Mansions

Get a feel for the luxurious lifestyles of Thailand’s elite as you visit three royal palaces and mansions. Wander the grounds of these opulent estates that now house the treasures and artifacts of Thailand’s heritage.

Begin your tour at the home of Jim Thompson—an American entrepreneur and socialite who revitalized the Thai silk industry, and became one of Thailand’s most revered foreign residents. Before mysteriously disappearing in Malaysia, Thompson was an avid collector of fine things. Ramble through his spacious home to admire his superior collection of Thai antiques. Priceless sculptures, paintings, porcelains, and other collectibles are tastefully displayed throughout the many rooms.

A former royal residence of Princess Chumbhotpong Paripatra, the Suan Pakkad Palace is now home to a large collection of Asian art and antiques. The princess, one of Thailand’s leading art collectors, decided to convert her private residence into an exhibition of fine Asian art. Built in the style of traditional Thai architecture, the complex is made up of 8 houses. Discover 4,000-year-old artifacts and the striking 450-year-old lacquer pavilion.

After standing dormant for years, Queen Sirikit rediscovered the Vimanmek Royal Mansion and opened its doors to the public as a commemorative site to King Rama V. The world’s largest golden teak building, this former royal dwelling now serves to showcase Thai heritage for future generations by displaying King Rama V’s personal affects and handicrafts, silverware, ceramics, crystal ware, and ivory.
