Auckland's Must-Do Four
Spend a glorious afternoon at Auckland’s leading attractions: Kelly Tarlton's Antarctic Encounter and Underwater World, the Native New Zealand Wildlife Encounter at the Auckland Zoo, a Pride of Auckland Sailing Yacht cruise, and a visit to Sky Tower.
Kelly Tarlton’s Antarctic Encounter and Underwater World illustrates world marine life from a diver’s perspective. You’ll get up-close and personal with many awesome creatures, kept dry and separated by see-through acrylic tunnels. See the magic of an Antarctic fantasyland, complete with penguins strutting in fresh snow and ice! The commentary is in English, and information sheets are available in Japanese, Italian, Mandarin, Mandarin traditional, German, Spanish, Thai, Korean, Indonesian, and French.
The exclusive Nature New Zealand Encounter Show at Auckland Zoo showcases New Zealand's native species. Experience the silent flight of a Morepork owl, observe a tame kiwi scavenging for food or a Kereru wood pigeon swallowing large native fruit, and feel the cold stare of a living dinosaur—the Tuatara.
Next stop is Auckland's famous Waitemata Harbour, which opens east to the Hauraki Gulf, south to Manukau Harbour, and west to the Tasman Sea. Waitemata is the Maori word for sparkling water, and you’ll soon be skimming across this shimmering bay aboard a Pride of Auckland yacht. Let the wind take you under the Auckland Harbour Bridge, along the beaches at Mission Bay or Takapuna, and past popular surf spots like Piha and Muriwai. Relax. Enjoy the sights, the informative commentary, complimentary tea or coffee, and fresh, homemade muffins.
Top off your Auckland experience at Sky Tower, the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere. Glass-fronted elevators scale the 1,000-foot (328-km) structure, which includes a hotel, restaurants, bars, three casinos, and a theater. On a clear day, you can see 50 miles (82 km) around the lush island and out onto the gleaming seas.
