Hotel Vila Gale Albacora

Hotel Information: A terra-cotta-tiled lobby contains a wood-burning fireplace, rattan seating, a wood ceiling, and rope-and-iron chandeliers, exemplifying the hotel's casual ambience. Gardens, pines, palms, and flowering gardens--all heavily populated by birds--grace the property. Tranquility-seekers and bird-watchers flock here year-round, while families arrive in summer for sunning-and-swimming holidays.

Amenity highlights: Shaped like a four-leaf clover and surrounded by an expansive sundeck furnished with cushioned lounge chairs and umbrellas, an outdoor swimming pool and a children's pool lie within a central garden courtyard. A health club (surcharge) includes a heated indoor pool and spa tub in a skylighted pavilion. A boat makes a five-minute trip to Tavira Island, where guests walk to an ocean beach, with water sports rentals available in summer.

Insider tip: The salt ponds flanking the hotel provide entertainment from spring to late summer, with migrating flamingos arriving in April and workers harvesting salt by hand from June to August.

Rooms

The hotel offers 162 guestrooms in a series of one-story white and ochre buildings formerly occupied by tuna fishers and their families. For a surcharge, a boat transports guests on a five-minute trip from a dock 100 meters (109 yards) from the hotel across a river (Rio Gilão) and an estuary (Ria Formosa) to Tavira Island, where they then walk a few hundred yards to the beach on the island's ocean side. In summer, independent operators offer watersports on the beach, including water skiing, kayaking, and windsurfing.

Property Amenities

Opened in 2001, the hotel comprises a restored village that was used by tuna fishers from 1881 until the tuna stopped arriving in 1972. Grounds include a museum displaying a scale model of the elaborate net system fishers used, boat and ship models, typical fishers' dress, and a video of tuna-fishing activity. The grounds also include the village's chapel, a tranquil retreat featuring a wood ceiling, delicate wrought-iron chandeliers, a stained glass window, and a lower wall clad in blue-and-white tiles.

There is a daily surcharge for access to the health club area, including the indoor pool, spa tub, steam room, and fitness room, which is equipped with weight machines and cardio machines. The health club also contains a massage room.

Complimentary children's activities are offered in summer both in the former village's schoolhouse and outdoors. A lobby computer provides a high-speed Internet connection (surcharge).
