Regal Shanghai East Asia Hotel

Hotel Information: Built into the side of Shanghai Stadium, the public areas of the Regal Shanghai East Asia Hotel lie along a curved space with floor-to-ceiling windows. Abundant natural light highlights the white marble floors and soaring columns. To the left of the entrance lies a lobby café. The reception desk is further behind, in a low-ceiling area with more intimate lighting and brown leather sofas. Chinese calligraphy and stone carvings decorate the wall. An arcade of shops and restaurants lies on either side. Public areas are characterized by muted brown and gold décor, with thick carpeting alternating with marble. Soft music and birdsong in corridors brings a touch of tranquility to the urban setting.

Insider tip: Shanghai Stadium is used for sporting events (especially soccer) and rock concerts, while the adjacent indoor stadium features conventions, sporting events such as table tennis tournaments, and international pop acts. The Olympic Pool is used for swimming competitions.

Location Details

Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG): Approximate travel time is 60 minutes and distance is 50 km (31 miles).

Hongqiao Domestic Airport (SHA): Approximate travel time is 15 minutes and distance is 9 km (6 miles).

Getting there: Taxi is undoubtedly the most convenient way to get from both airports. The hotel also offers airport pickup. An airport shuttle bus service operates a route from Pudong International Aiport to the hotel. It is also possible to take the high-speed MAGLEV (magnetic levitation train), and change to a regular metro train. From Hongqiao Airport, a CAAC shuttle bus and several public buses run into the city center, from which it is possible to transfer to the metro. Rental cars are not recommended for travelers unfamiliar with this area.

Getting around: Public transport or taxi is both cheap and convenient. Metered taxis are abundant and cheap, with flagfall costing CNY10 (US$1–$5) for the first 3 km, and CNY2 (US$0.25) for subsequent km. Rates vary slightly between taxi companies and rise by 30 percent late at night. Metros operate from around 6 AM to 10 AM. The nearest metro station is Shanghai Indoor Stadium on lines 1 and 4 (not to be confused with the previous stop, Shanghai Stadium). Yi Shan Lu station on line 2 is a few blocks away. Fares are CNY2–4 (less than US$1) per trip, but a rechargeable Jiaotong Card is more convenient for frequent users, and costs CNY30 (US$1–$5). Buses charge a flat fare of CNY1–2 (less than US$1), but are difficult to navigate without a knowledge of Chinese.

Closest bus stop to the hotel: Olympic Club, Second Zhong Shan Road South.
Approximate travel time from the airport to the hotel: 60 minutes
Approximate cost (subject to change without notice): CNY30 (US$1–$5)

Schedule and directions (subject to change without notice): The Pudong Airport Shuttle has a desk in the arrivals hall with routes and schedules information. The shuttle departs the airport at 7:10 AM, 8:05 AM, 9 AM, and then 50 minutes past every hour until 7:40 PM. The bus departs from outside the arrivals hall; guests should join line D. Passengers should alight at the Olympic Club on Second Zhong Shan Road South, which is just two minutes’ walk from the Regal East Asia Hotel. The stadium, into which it is built, is visible on alighting from the bus.

There is no shuttle bus serving Hongqiao Airport to a destination near the Regal East Asia Hotel. A CAAC shuttle and public buses operate into the city, from which it is possible to transfer to the metro, but this is lengthy and laborious.

Closest train station to the hotel: Shanghai Indoor Stadium
Approximate travel time from the airport to the train station: 40 minutes
Approximate train cost (subject to change without notice): CNY50 (US$6–$10)

Train schedules and directions (subject to change without notice): Only Pudong International Airport is served by train. The MAGLEV (magnetic levitation train) takes eight minutes to travel the 31 km (19 miles) into the city, and is the world’s fastest train. It operates every 15 minutes from 7 AM to 9 PM and terminates at Long Yang Road station. From here, guests should join metro line 2 and change at Dong Fang Road station onto line 4. Guests should then alight at Shanghai Indoor Stadium station (not to be confused with the previous stop, Shanghai Stadium). The stadium, into which the hotel is built, is visible on emerging from the station, and is just a short walk away

Approximate travel time from the airport to the hotel: 60 minutes from Pudong International Airport, 20 minutes from Hongqiao Domestic Airport.
Approximate cost (subject to change without notice): CNY150 (US$20–$25) from Pudong International Airport, CNY50 (US$5–$10) from Hongqiao Domestic Airport.

Instructions: Taxi stands at both airports are located outside baggage claim. Guests are advised to avoid the taxi touts and follow the signs to the taxi rank, where queues from along metal railings and a marshal controls proceedings. Marshals may be able to translate the hotel name, but it would be preferable to have it written in Chinese characters, or have the hotel already located on a bilingual map. Maps can be obtained from the tourist information desk inside the terminal buildings.

Travel time from the airport to the hotel: 60 minutes from Pudong International Airport, 20 minutes from Hongqiao Domestic Airport
Approximate cost (subject to change without notice): CNY480 (US$60–$65) for a regular car or CNY720 (US$90–$95) for a limousine.

Schedules and directions (subject to change without notice): Drivers, holding signs, wait in the arrivals hall of both airports, just beyond baggage claim.
