Best Western Inn of Sedona

Hotel Information: Off Sedona’s main thoroughfare, a short, winding road leads to this hilltop hotel. The lobby is handsomely appointed with brown-leather chairs, a large copper table, a rock fireplace, and stone floors. Guests are primarily vacationers who appreciate the combination of splendid scenery and easy access to shopping, dining, and recreation.

Amenity highlights: A sundeck with panoramic Red Rock views surrounds the freeform pool and 12-person spa tub. Views are equally impressive from the terraced promenade decks. Guests can enjoy complimentary Continental breakfast in the Southwestern-decorated Breakfast Nook or outside on the promenade decks or shaded patio. The Best Western Inn of Sedona offers complimentary shuttle service within a three-mile radius.

Insider tip: Once known as the Wickedest Town in Arizona, tiny Jerome is a former mining settlement clinging to a mountainside. This popular daytrip destination is about 27 miles from the hotel. After exploring shops and saloons, visitors can take a short gravel road to the rustic Gold King Mine. Highlights include original buildings, an operating sawmill from 1914, vintage trucks and mining equipment, amazing valley views, and friendly farm animals.

The Sedona area offers scores of hiking trails for all expertise levels. The Airport Mesa Trail, a reputed New Age vortex site, is a half-mile away. The top of the mesa, reached by an easy drive, is a spectacular spot for sunset-viewing. Soldier Pass Trail, one mile from the hotel, provides access to rock pools and the Devil’s Kitchen sinkhole. At Slide Rock State Park, eight miles away, visitors can slide down a natural water chute. The West Fork Trail, about a mile past the park, is a leafy hike with numerous creek crossings and close-up views of the sheer canyon walls. (All vehicles parked in trailhead lots must display a Red Rock Pass, sold at many area stores, hotels, and trailheads.)

Horseback riding, mountain biking, birding, and hot-air ballooning are other popular pursuits. Four-wheel-drive tours visit canyons, red-rock landscapes, and centuries-old Native American ruins. Area golf courses combine top-notch play with spectacular scenery. Among those open to the public are the Oakcreek Country Club, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and Robert Trent Jones Jr., and the Sedona Golf Resort. Both are about eight miles from the hotel. A less-expensive alternative is the Beaver Creek Golf Club, about 20 miles away and a favorite among local golfers.
