Hotel Information: Celebrities and diplomats are regulars at this hotel, a Belle Époque masterpiece brimming with crystal, frescoes, soaring ceilings, sculpted columns, and precious antiques. The lobby is appointed with white-marble reception and concierge desks, red-velvet throne chairs, Oriental rugs, and a 30-foot ceiling.
Amenity highlights: Opened by César Ritz in 1894, the St. Regis was one of Rome’s first deluxe hotels. It underwent a €30-million restoration in 1999, returning the Sala Ritz ballroom to its original glory, redoing every antique-filled room, and creating the Caroli Health Club and a staffed business center. The hotel’s contemporary Vivendo dining room was voted Rome’s best restaurant by Zagat in 2002 and 2003. Personal shoppers, 24-hour butler service, the latest pampering treatments, and a private diplomatic entrance enhance the hotel’s considerable appeal.
Insider tip: For a very special occasion, guests can hire the hotel restaurant’s vaulted wine cellar. The room serves 12 people at candlelit tables or 30 for intimate cocktails. The cellar includes 520 wines, 40 of which are provided specially for the hotel by individual vineyards. The cellar also hosts regular wine tastings.
