Hotel Information: Opened in 2004, Fortyseven - A Summit Hotel appeals to travellers appreciative of its contemporary style, exemplified by a lighted frosted-glass reception desk, and of works by notable 20th-century Italian artists, including Mastroianni sculptures and Rotella paintings.
Amenity highlights: The hotel's casual atmosphere extends to the roof terrace, where, from late afternoon to late night from April through October, guests can relax on cushioned chairs and couches while enjoying drinks and light Mediterranean fare. Candlelight softly illuminates the terrace after dark.
Insider tip: Across a piazza 75 metres from the hotel, Santa Maria in Cosmedin church contains a circular stone mask with an unnerving stare called Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth). Legend says the mask would bite a liar who stuck a hand into its mouth. Travellers can still take this ancient lie-detector test, as Gregory Peck famously did for the benefit of Audrey Hepburn in the 1953 movie Roman Holiday.
