Hotel Information: Dating from the early 20th century, this white-brick building fringed with palm trees stands opposite the fourth-century SS. Quattro Coronati Church. A wall of black roses by Italian artist Paolo Canevari makes a dramatic statement inside, while colorful art displayed in the rest of the marble lobby complements the lilacs and blues of the lounge area. The hotel hosts mainly businesspeople during the week and vacationers on weekends.
Amenity highlights: The glass-topped, black-marble Centrum Bar serves light meals, snacks, and cocktails, as well as 31 brands of whiskey and four brands of Cuban cigars. Drinks and a light, a la carte menu are also served on the two roof-top terraces, open year-round. Insider tip: The immediate area is rich in tiny art galleries exhibiting the work of young local artists; at least three venues are within two blocks of the hotel. On via dei SS. Quattro behind the hotel are a number of family-run trattoria—many apparently untouched by the commercial demands of the area—as well as an old-fashioned chocolatier and an antiquarian bookstore.
Rooms
The four-story Capo D Africa Hotel, Rome, has 65 air-conditioned guestrooms. Rooms are decorated in soft sand-and-ochre tones with heavy striped blackout drapes, cream-and-red-leather upholstery, modern cherry-wood desks and headboards, and stylish chrome-and-glass coffee tables and floor lamps. Walls display two artworks by Italian artist Mariano Rossano. All rooms have minibars, laptop-sized safes, and cable TV with pay movies.
