Camino Real Oaxaca

Hotel Information: Housed in a former convent, sections of which date back to the 16th century, this hotel preserves regal colonial splendor while incorporating modern amenities and conveniences. The peaceful surroundings incorporate gardens planted with approximately 87 different types of flowers and plants. Previous guests have included the King and Queen of Spain and many Mexican presidents.

Amenity highlights: The hotel’s restaurant, El Refectorio, provides an eclectic dining experience with candlelit and colonial-art filled rooms and outdoor spaces. Regional fare, including traditional moles, is spotlighted. Mariachi music and Mexican buffets are featured on Saturday nights.

Flower-filled patios include a main garden, where guests can access complimentary wireless Internet access. The courtyard’s outdoor pool is open year-round.

Insider tip: The Oaxaca area is renowned for its lively markets. Among the local wares are baskets with geometric designs in bright colors; woolen rugs woven on pedal-operated looms; brightly colored, fanciful figures carved from copal wood; and a variety of pottery made with and without pottery wheels.
