Hotel Information: On a quiet, one-way street two blocks from Queen’s Surf Beach, a rainbow flag marks the gay-owned and gay-operated Cabana at Waikiki for male couples. This 1960s-era building was completely remodeled as a resort in 1999. The unassuming garage office is adorned with Egyptian-style frescoes. The 15 one-bedroom suites spread over three floors.
Amenity highlights: The Cabana at Waikiki, a Gay Resort provides complimentary Continental breakfasts and thrice-weekly complimentary cocktail hours with tropical drinks. The verandah with its tropical plants has complimentary wireless Internet access (days only) and a complimentary computer. A clothing-optional spa tub accommodates eight people. Guests at this Honolulu hotel receive complimentary passes for a fitness center 1.5 miles away.
Insider tip: Two blocks away from the hotel are the sandy and grassy areas of Kuhio beach, which on Saturdays and Sundays, from late afternoon until mid-evening, celebrates Sunset on the Beach with food, live music, and open-air movies.
Rooms
Stairways (no elevator) and three exterior corridors lead to the 15 one-bedroom, nonsmoking suites of the Cabana. All suites measure about 500 square feet; bedrooms can be closed off by white-louvered doors. Living rooms have Asian day beds and entertainment centers with TVs, CD players, and VCRs.
City-view lanais have teak furniture. Island-style decor includes teak desks, and bamboo and glass-topped coffee tables. Kitchenettes have toasters, blenders, coffee makers (complimentary coffee for first day), microwaves, compact refrigerators, dishes and utensils. Local calls are free.
