Hotel Information: The Soho Grand Hotel draws its inspiration from SoHo itself, where 19th-century industrial buildings with ornate cast-iron facades are now home to galleries, theaters, restaurants, and shops. The Old New York atmosphere begins with the two-level lobby anchored by massive, red-brick sculpted columns.
Linking the entry level to the second level is a grand staircase suspended by cables and paved with bottle glass. (Bottle-glass disks were used in the early 1900s to light dwellings below street level and can still be seen around SoHo today.) The hotel is favored by the fashion and entertainment industry, with a guest roster that includes Kevin Spacey, Spike Lee, k.d. lang, and Naomi Campbell.
Amenity highlights: Adjoining the lobby on the second level, the lounge offers a dramatic setting for people-watching, intimate tête-à-têtes, or viewing the streetscape below. Sixteen-foot-high windows are softened with muslin sheers and 900-pound velvet curtains. The ceiling is fashioned of handmade mercury mirror glass embedded with chicken wire. Seating areas feature oversized sofas, tall palms, and hand-painted tables with legs shaped like elephant tusks. Upholstery spans the centuries with a mix of 1800s William Morris patterns and modern textiles.
Insider tip: Outside the West Broadway entrance stands a 17th-century French stone basin, used these days as a "dog bar." It's a favored watering hole for pooches from the neighborhood and from the hotel to meet, greet, and quench their thirst.
Rooms
Soho Grand Hotel offers 363 guestrooms with large windows in a 17-story building constructed in the 1990s to resemble one of the century-old neighbor factories. Dressed in a palette of grays and coffee tones, the rooms feature decor, including copper tables, inspired by the Arts & Crafts Movement. Walls display a changing collection of black-and-white photos (available for purchase). Platform beds with chocolate-colored leather headboards include pillowtop mattresses, Frette Italian linens, feather-down pillows, and tan-and-white seersucker comforters.
Wireless Internet access is available in all guestrooms. Entertainment centers contain plasma televisions, Bose Wave CD player/radios, and a CD library, which includes CDs of artists who have stayed in the hotel. The hotel lends complimentary iPods and Bose SoundDock systems (refundable deposit required). The iPods are programmed with music selected by the hotel.
Bathrooms recall Old New York, with subway-style ceramic wall tiles, gray-and-white hexagonal floor tiles, and pedestal sinks. Dual lights made of hand-blown glass bell jars recall the era when electricity was replacing gas and wary New Yorkers continued to use both. Bathrooms also contain contemporary shower/tub combinations and Frette Italian bathrobes.
Guests have a choice of a complimentary New York Times, London Times, USA Today, or Wall Street Journal delivered. Guests may borrow a goldfish, and, if desired, can take it home in a plastic carrier.
For guests with babies and toddlers, the hotel's complimentary Grand Baby Program allows parents to have guestrooms furnished with cribs, protective bumpers, outlet protectors, baby bath kits, and travel totes with baby basics. Additional items are available upon request, including strollers, handy wipes, high chairs, pacifiers, diaper pails, and baby bathrobes.
At check-in, children ages 3–12 receive a children's guide to local shopping, attractions, and activities. The packet also includes a children's room-service menu and a schedule of children's films shown at Tribeca Grand Hotel, a partner property three blocks away, during Sunday Brunch.
Each floor has a complimentary self-service espresso/coffee/tea/cocoa bar.
