Hotel Information: Opened in 1901, the independently owned and operated Hotel Metro welcomes guests into an Art Deco lobby with mirrored columns and black-and-white photos of Greta Garbo. Service has a personal touch because most staff members have been with the hotel since it reopened in 1996 following renovation under current owners.
Insider tip: Greeley Square, three blocks south at Broadway, is a tribute to 19th-century New York newspaper editor Horace Greeley, who uttered the quintessentially optimistic American advice, "Go west, young man." This urban enclave includes a coffee/pastries kiosk and is a sunny place to relax in good weather.
