The celebration got its start in 1904, when New York Times publisher Alfred Ochs sought to draw attention to the official opening of his paper’s headquarters in a square named after the paper. The bash, which featured fireworks at its culmination, was such a hit that it became an annual ritual that continues to this day. Only now, a ball of light marks the new year, a tradition that began in 1907 because fireworks were banned.
