Insider tip: A National Historic Landmark and one of New York's first skyscrapers when it opened in 1902, the 22-story Flatiron Building four blocks south of Broadway Plaza Hotel is a popular photo subject. The distinctive narrow-triangle- shaped building--which resembled the clothes irons of the day--caused a wind-tunnel effect. Men lined up on 23rd Street in case the wind's effect on women's long skirts would reveal their ankles. Police officers shooed them away ("skidoo, you rascals!"), leading to the once-popular term "23-skidoo."
