Hotel Information: Tennessee Williams completed A Streetcar Named Desire while staying at this historic French Quarter hotel. Built in 1788, the Maison de Ville is between Bourbon and Royal Sts, three blocks from Jackson Square. Arriving guests ring a doorbell and are greeted in a small, home-style foyer. In the evenings, guests gather in the parlor next to a fireplace for complimentary port or sherry.
Amenity highlights: Complimentary Continental breakfast with fresh croissants is served daily. Guests can opt to take breakfast in the hotel's courtyard, or have it delivered to their room on a silver tray with the morning newspaper. An outdoor pool, said to be the oldest in the French Quarter and set in its original bricks, is located at the Audubon Cottages two blocks from the main hotel building.
Insider tip: Built in 1745, the old Ursuline Convent is six blocks away at 1114 Chartres St. A federal landmark, the convent is reputed to be the oldest building in the Mississippi Valley and the only one to survive the French Colonial era. It was saved from destruction in the 1788 New Orleans fire by a Franciscan missionary and African-American "bucket brigade."
