Hotel Information: Four miles from downtown Napa, this resort stands at the base of a low hill planted with grapevines. The subterranean Estate Cave, carved into the hillside, houses the Spa Terra and Estate Wine Bar. The resort's lobby is handsomely appointed with grapevine chandeliers, a double-sided fireplace, beamed ceiling, and velvet chairs and couches. The location at the southern tip of the Napa Valley provides easy access to hundreds of wineries.

Amenity highlights: The Spa Terra, tucked into the 22,000-square-foot Estate Cave, offers 10 treatment rooms, along a relaxation room, boutique, steam grottoes, and spa tubs. The cave also houses the Estate Wine Bar, showcasing premium boutique wines. A trail winds through the Meritage's eight-acre vineyard on the sun-dappled hillside.

Insider tip: Heading north to the wineries? Be sure to stop at The Culinary Institute of America (CIA) at Greystone, the world-renowned college for aspiring chefs. Housed in a magnificent 19th-century stone building, the CIA is about 24 miles from The Meritage Resort and Spa. The school hosts cooking demonstrations—with samplings, of course!—four days a week. Fee is $15 (subject to change); reservations at least a week in advance are advised. There's no charge to stroll the grounds, view the exhibits, or browse the campus store.

Rooms

Guestrooms at The Meritage Resort and Spa feature Tuscan-inspired decor, including hand-painted details and rich fabrics. Beds are outfitted with pillowtop mattresses, down duvets, and plenty of fluffy down/feather pillows. 32-inch HD plasma TVs come with DVD players. Compact refrigerators are stocked with wine, bottled water, and soft drinks (all included in resort fee). Coffeemakers brew Starbucks coffee. Wireless and wired high-speed Internet access are available. Recreation

An outdoor lap pool, open year-round, is surrounded by an expansive sundeck with a spa tub, lounge chairs, conversation seating, and a firepit that is lit at dusk. A bocce ball court is adjacent. Guests also enjoy access to the outdoor pool and spa tub at the adjacent Vino Bello condominium resort.

The fitness center, open 24 hours, features cardio machines with individual TVs.

The concierge can arrange hot-air balloon rides, wine-tasting tours by bicycle, and other adventures, with pick-up at the resort.

The Napa Valley hosts a wide array of wildlife. Hawks and other raptors are often spotted drifting overhead.
