Townhouse Hotel Miami

Hotel Information: The only traces of this hotel’s Art Deco past are a 1939 edifice and the original terrazzo floors in the lobby. Otherwise the Townhouse, which opened in 2000, is strikingly modern. Guests climb a short flight of stairs to an all-white lobby with low-slung couches, ceiling fans, and red accents of throw pillows, a single scarlet chair, and bicycles leaning against the wall. The cheap-but-chic Townhouse attracts travelers with an eye for design, folks in search of wireless Internet, and the occasional celebrity.

Amenity highlights: Located on the north edge of South Beach, the Townhouse Hotel Miami is a streamlined affair a half-block from the beach. Fabric and carpeting come from Paris, wireless Internet access is available throughout, and hallways include benches, magazines, and artfully placed exercise equipment. On site is a popular sushi spot, and a rooftop deck has waterbeds for sunbathing; after dark, it’s an open-air bar. Plenty of tourist attractions are within walking distance, such as the Bass Museum of Art, Lincoln Road, and the Jackie Gleason Theater.

Insider tip: A block from the Townhouse Hotel is the Bass Museum of Art, a 1930 Art Deco building that houses a variety of pieces including paintings by European masters such as Rubens, altar pieces by Botticelli, and more contemporary work by Asian, North American, and Latin American artists.

Rooms

The Townhouse Hotel has 70 guestrooms in a five-story building. Guestrooms, designed to look like high-end dorm rooms, are spare and mostly white, with red-and-white lamps, area rugs, and tan body pillows offering splashes of color. Quirky touches include red beach balls perched on each bed. White-marble bathrooms provide walk-in showers, and TVs sit on black stands.

Wireless Internet access is available throughout the hotel, including guestrooms (surcharge). Travelers can stock their refrigerators with bottled water, beer, Bacardi, and snacks from the front-desk gift shop. (The gift shop also provides flip-flops and “Hangover from Hell” eye masks.)

Recreation

The rooftop terrace has teak patio furniture and queen-size waterbeds for lounging. During the day, the glass water tower is a cave into which sunbathers venture to wet their feet in a shallow pool and sit on benches misted by a small waterfall. The hotel also has a few bicycles that can be rented. Instead of a fitness center, individual work-out bikes and StairMasters are tucked at the end of floor hallways.

On the beach, vendors rent chairs and cabanas, and food carts sell snacks and drinks. Mopeds are available for rent in South Beach. Nearby Flamingo Park has tennis courts and a public pool. Windsurfers head to Hobie Beach.

Wide hallways with benches and stacks of magazines assist the lounging process. The Townhouse's rooftop sundeck has red lounge chairs and umbrellas, puffy waterbeds for lounging. A bar is open Wednesday through Saturday nights, turning the roof into a nightspot, often with a DJ.
