Hotel Information: A placid, well-maintained resort situated away from the resort-area bustle, Sugar Beach lives up to its sweet name. The resort's developer, struck by the soft, light-colored sand along the ocean, bestowed the name. (Hardly anyone uses the beach's Hawaiian name anymore.) Families and budget-minded travelers come here to rest, relax, swim, barbecue at sunset, and walk the beach.
Amenity highlights: The ocean and the 3-mile, undeveloped beach bestow a relaxing sense of space here. Views of the ocean, sunsets, and the West Maui Mountains looming to the north refresh guests' spirits. The activities—paddling in the pool, soaking in the spa, grilling steaks—are so low key it's as if the beach resort had hung out a do-not-disturb sign for guests' benefit.
Insider tip: Cook-at-home guests can travel three-quarters of a mile south three times a week to where the Farmers Market of Maui sells locally grown produce, local cheeses, freshly baked banana bread, and other treats at a shaded roadside stand.

Tranquil 216-room Sugar Beach Resort offers sweeping views of the ocean from lanais. Renovation Notice
This resort will begin renovating its exterior November 19, 2007 - August 2008 (completion date subject to change). During this time, the pool and all shops will remain open.
The work will involve repairing concrete on exterior walls and lanais, removing old paint, and resealing and painting the areas. Some work may require the use of chipping and/or jackhammers, which will be noisy and dusty. The hotel advises that the disruption to guests staying in adjacent units will be minimal, as rooms will be blocked off to keep guests away from work areas.
Work will be underway 9 AM-5 PM Monday through Friday, and intermittent on Saturdays. No work will be done November 22-23, 2007 and December 22, 2007 - January 3, 2008.
The hotel assures that it will make every effort to minimize construction noise and related disturbance.

Recreation
The Kihei resort offers two tennis courts and a putting green. The activities desk can arrange many other recreational activities in South Maui. There are 17 golf courses in South and West Maui, including four resort courses and one public course within 8 miles of Sugar Beach Resort. The activities desk makes reservations at them all.
Also through the activities desk, the following beach gear can be rented: boogie boards, body boards, surfboards, boards with masks for viewing underwater life, snorkel sets, chairs, and umbrellas. Snorkeling and scuba-diving trips to the island of Molokini off South Maui can be booked through the activities desk.

Property Amenities
This resort is located in Kihei, Hawaii. The 216-unit beach resort's pool complex offers swimming, a children's pool, a big hot tub, and an outstanding barbecue area consisting of six gas grills, a tile food-preparation counter, and two permanent-tile picnic tables. Surrounding the pool is a roomy sundeck, and next to the ocean is a spacious sunning lawn. Near hotelpool and sunning lawn, an open-air shelter shades tables and chairs, where guests like to put up their feet and read. Within the shelter is a permanent tabletop backgammon board.
In Sugar Beach Resort's lobby, an activities desk books tours, excursions, luaus, and all the other activities and attractions available on Maui, as well as car rentals. It also rents videotapes. Within the resort is a convenience/liquor store and the shop of a noted Hawaiian candle maker.
