Hotel Information: Behind the cinquecento stone façade of the former Free Trade Hall lies the Radisson Edwardian Manchester, opened in 2004. Affluent business and leisure travellers and local celebrities mingle in the soaring glass atrium and reception, where Asian objets d’art and modern oil paintings sit alongside original sculptures and plaques recording the site’s rich political, cultural and musical history.
Amenity highlights: The hotel health club comprises a fitness room, indoor pool, spa tub, steam room and sauna, as well as five treatment rooms. Modern British cuisine is served for lunch and dinner in the lively restaurant, which is lavishly decorated with black lacquered wood, crocodile skin chairs, and red chandeliers; at night guests and locals sip cocktails until late at the bar. Complimentary wireless Internet is available throughout the building.
Insider tip: One block from the hotel, the Bridgewater Hall is a dramatic glass, steel and concrete structure, built to replace the Free Trade Hall. A masterpiece of architectural and acoustic engineering, the 2,300-capacity venue sits upon giant springs that suspend the building above its foundations, ensuring it is completely soundproofed. Manchester’s renowned symphony orchestra, The Hallé, resides here.
