Hotel Information: Wrought iron gates monogrammed with Refuge Insurance Company insignias record the former purpose of this grand 19th century grade II-listed terracotta building. A stained glass cupola tops the lofty cream stone reception area; a wide marble staircase leads to the spacious, high-ceilinged lounge bar where guests relax before heading out for business, concerts, football matches and shopping.
Amenity highlights: Tempus restaurant serves modern international dishes, while drinks, light meals and afternoon teas are available all day in the lounge bar. Seven air-conditioned meeting rooms and a grand ballroom can host functions for two to 1,000 people. Renovated in 2005, the public areas retain listed period features such as ornate ceramic tiles, a cast-iron and marble staircase, and even the old safe room.
Insider tip: Manchester’s famous ‘curry mile’ starts just over a mile from the hotel in the Rusholme area of the city. Around 20 years ago there were just a few Indian sweet centres, such as the Sanam; these days around 50 establishments entice diners with dazzling neon lights, and a wide range of Asian food.
