Insider tip: Guests can take cable cars from near Funchal Old Town up to the Monte area for gardens and panoramic views, then return in 19th-century style – in a traditional two-seater wicker sledge. Men in traditional white cotton clothing and straw hats push, steer and brake the sledges, which glide on wooden runners and can reach speeds of nearly 50 kilometres per hour. The two-kilometre journey takes about 10 minutes.

Lido, an oceanfront sports park, is 750 metres from the hotel, and features family and children's saltwater pools, ocean swimming, and a scuba-diving centre.
Two kilometres west of the hotel, independent operators on Formosa Beach offer water sports such as kayaks, pedal-boats, windsurfing, waterskiing, sail boats, jet skis and motor boats during warm-weather months.
