Travel Details

Miyako Hotel Los Angeles

Hotel Information: This bright, casual, and friendly hotel is surrounded by long-established businesses as well as newer cultural attractions. A kinetic sculpture by artist Susumu Shingu, poised above the entrance, greets the clientele of businesspeople, government workers, vacationers, and baseball fans. Traditional Japanese floral arrangements are exhibited within the lobby area, and photographer Toyo Miyatake’s 1930s prints hang on corridor walls.

Amenity highlights: Miyako Spa, on the third floor, provides soothing peace after a long day of work or sightseeing. Separate areas are provided for men and women, each with dressing and relaxation areas, spa tubs, saunas, steam rooms, and shiatsu massage treatment rooms. A fitness room, outdoor patio with chaise lounges, and computer station for Web surfing and e-mail access are also at hand (surcharges).

Insider tip: While L.A.’s Museum of Contemporary Art was being constructed, architect Frank Gehry turned a renovated warehouse—located one block from the hotel--into a temporary exhibition space. Known for its dynamic architecture and avant-garde works and installations, the “Temporary Contemporary” (MOCA at the Geffen) was such a hit that it was kept as a permanent branch of the main museum.
