Hotel Information: Behind the sober façade of what was once the private lodgings for the Royal Commonwealth Society Club (still housed on part of the premises) lies the bright reception, with cheery pale yellow and cherrywood hues. International businesspeople provide the bulk of the guests, some staying overnight and others for several months. Weekends attract a few holidaymaking families.

Insider tip: Guests can start the day with an early morning stroll in peaceful Whitehall Gardens, about one-minute's walk down tree-lined Northumberland Avenue along the River Thames. This flourishing sliver of a park is part of the Victoria Embankment Gardens and, apart from the immaculately kept greenery and inviting benches, is home to an array of statues to various wartime personalities.
