Insider tip: One of the ways of “making merit” in Buddhism is to give alms to the monks. Every morning monks walk traditional neighbourhoods collecting alms. Wake up early and walk out to the main road to watch the monks file past around 6:30 AM. Or better yet, increase your own merit by putting alms or food in their bowls. Then make it back to the hotel by 7 AM for a free guided bicycle tour through the coconut groves.

Spa

The Baan Taling Spa, located on two different levels, has sweeping views down the cliff to the sea. The six treatment rooms are combination indoor/outdoor suites, all overlooking the ocean. All treatments provide herbal tea before and after.

Spa philosophy

The Baan Taling Ngam Spa strives to blend Eastern and Western styles and philosophies, and is the first in Thailand to use only ‘Chi’ water in treatments. ‘Chi’ water differs from H20 on a molecular level, and is used to increase detoxification, improve the immune system, metabolism and blood circulation, and to enhance energy.

Recreation

Baan Taling Ngam has a cliff-top infinity pool and a beachside, free-form pool. Two floodlit tennis courts are free of charge to guests. Volleyball is set up regularly on the beach. The on-site fitness centre has a sauna and steam rooms, stationary bikes, free weights, weight machines, and treadmills. A driving range and ‘pitch and putt’ are on site. Sea kayaks, windsurf boards, and sailboats are all available to guests throughout the day. Mountain bikes are also free to borrow, and there are daily guided tours of the surrounding areas.

Baan Taling Ngam can arrange full and half-day trips to the surrounding areas to take advantage of Koh Samui’s many recreational opportunities. Visits to neighbouring islands are popular, including the Ang Thong National Marine Park, 30 km (19 miles) offshore, where coral reefs make great snorkelling. Buildings utilise Thai architectural themes to create an open feel throughout with panoramic views. There are two main swimming pools, and five villa pools. There is also a day spa, fitness centre, boutique, spa tub, beauty salon, DVD rentals (surcharge), free water sport equipment and mountain bikes, and two cement tennis courts. Several shuttles are available to spots around the island, and excursions can be arranged to go snorkelling at nearby coral reefs or elephant trekking.

Getting there: The property is on the opposite side of the island from the airport. It will be necessary to hire a taxi from the stand outside the airport, or use the property’s airport transportation service. Rental cars are not recommended for travelers unfamiliar with this area.

Lom Talay - Adjacent to the lobby and infinity pool, Lom Talay specialises in Mediterranean and Thai food served on the alfresco terrace. Beautiful cliff-top views of the property, especially as the sun sets over the Gulf of Thailand, are a highlight. An international buffet is served every morning, and the restaurant is open until late.

Baan Chantra - Guests can enjoy Royal Thai cuisine while sitting on traditional Thai style pillows and enjoying classical music and dance. Western style seating is also available. Open evenings for dinner. Closed Tuesdays.

The Promenade - A seafood restaurant right on the beach, The Promenade specialises in dressing up the day’s catch from nearby fishing village, Taling Ngam. A selection of international dishes and snacks are also served throughout the day.

The Verandah Bar - Serving up tropical cocktails and a wide selection of spirits, The Verandah Bar offers spectacular views of the gulf. Sitting in the Main Sala, near reception, it provides a relaxing atmosphere from morning until late.

The Pool Deck - Serves cocktails and snacks to swimmers throughout the day.

Private Dining - Guests looking for something special can book the Sala Thai, adjacent to the infinity pool, for small parties. Spectacular views and Thai set menus are enjoyed in a private setting.
