Hotel Information: A circular driveway leads off a quiet side street to this atrium-style hotel, which welcomes both business travelers and vacationers to a sky-lit lobby area. Named for the popular tourist city of Brighton, England, the Kyoto Brighton creates its own relaxing, gardenlike atmosphere with fresh plants overhanging the atrium walls from the stories above, and a small, river-like fountain flowing past a café-style restaurant that overlooks a sunken lobby lounge. Here, guests can people-watch while sipping beverages and nibbling a snack or two.

Amenity highlights: Branching off from the main lobby area are several restaurants, a bar with special glasses for loyal guests, a small computer room with complimentary high-speed Internet access, and multiple event/conference rooms. Rooms

Located on six floors surrounding the atrium area, the Kyoto Brighton’s 183 guestrooms are accessible by glass-walled elevators. All have purified, PH-balanced tap water suitable for drinking, and humidifiers for the drier fall and winter months. Guestrooms are outfitted with light wood furnishings and decorated in grays, tans, and other neutral colors. Beds are topped with down and cotton duvet covers; bedside switches control the guestroom lights. Sitting areas in each comprise small tables, chairs, and built-in sofas, which face cable TVs. Yukata (Japanese-style nightwear) can be found in the closets, along with slippers. Kansai International Airport (KIX): Approximate travel time is 1 hour, 20 minutes, and distance is approximately 90 km (55 miles).

Itami Airport (ITM): Approximate travel time is 1 hour and approximate distance is 70 km (45 miles).

Getting there: From KIX, the Haruku train travels directly to JR Kyoto Station, which is a 15-minute train or complimentary shuttle ride from the hotel. From ITM, guests can take a comfortable bus for the 60- to 90-minute trip to Kyoto Station. Taxis are available from both airports, but at a steep rate. Getting around:Because many of the city’s main attractions are within close proximity of each other and Kyoto has few hills, bicycles are a practical, inexpensive way to combine transportation with sightseeing. Bicycle rentals are available at the hotel for JPY1,000–JPY2,000 per day. Taxis, which can be flagged at the hotel, start at JPY650 for the first 2 km (1 mile) and increase from there per km. The city’s 26-station subway system has north-south and east-west lines. Fares start at JPY200 and increase by distance traveled. The north-south Karasuma line runs to Imadegawa Station, which is a 15-minute ride away via the hotel’s complimentary shuttle.

Schedule and directions (subject to change without notice): Shuttle service is available to and from nearby Imadegawa subway station. The shuttle arrives at the station at Exit 4 between 8:20 AM and 9:40 PM, every 20 and 40 minutes past the hour. The shuttle leaves the hotel every 20 minutes or so. Guests arriving via JR Kyoto Station can take the Karasuma subway line to Imadegawa Station and then take the complimentary shuttle, which will arrive at Exit 4, to the hotel.

Know Before You Go

The Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare requires all international visitors to submit their passport number and nationality when registering at any lodging facility (inns, hotels, motels, etc.). Feerie - Café-style restaurant located on the main level, looking out to the atrium over a multi-level pond. Serves Japanese and Western-style breakfasts, and organic vegetables for all meals. Baked goods made fresh on site. Moonshiner - Signature bar. Entrance-area cupboard holds individual glasses for each guest; glasses are kept in the cupboard for repeat guests. Small clusters of sofas and tables combine with soft overhead lighting for an intimate atmosphere.

Vis-à-Vis - French restaurant. Open for lunch and dinner only. More formal atmosphere generated by fine linens and chandelier-style lighting. Serves only organic vegetables.
