Insider tip: This area is where King Kamehameha established his summer residence in 1812 after unifying the Hawaiian Islands and returning to Kona, his homeland. Next to the Kona Pier in the center of Kailua-Kona is the waterfront location of his thatch-roof home and a temple he had built. Replicas of home and temple have been constructed, with signs explaining their significance, and the area has been preserved as a National Historic Site.

Castle Kona Reef, a Condominium Resort provides 130 units. The units are located in six three- and four-story buildings of pale-gray stucco with blue-tile roofs. Decor varies, but all units offer an island-style ambience. Each includes a patio or balcony furnished with chairs. Views are of gardens or the ocean. Conveniences include fully equipped kitchens and washer/dryers. Living/dining areas are air conditioned, while bedrooms have ceiling fans. VCRs and CD players are included.
