Hotel Information: A magnificent Chinese junk made of jade stands in the atrium-style lobby of the White Swan, which also features rockery, a waterfall, pond, and pavilion, said to resemble the landscapes of southern China. Rooms
The White Swan has 843 guestrooms. Guestrooms are partly carpeted and partly tiled, with pastel décor and Chinese prints. Minibars, refrigerators, complimentary bottled water, and coffee/tea kettles provide refreshment. High-speed Internet access is charged on a half-day basis, but no more than a set limit in any one-month period. Cable/satellite TV channels include CNN, Star Sports, HBO, Discovery Channel, and National Geographic, as well as Hong Kong, Japanese, French, and German channels. The White Swan has two outdoor swimming pools, one freeform for relaxation and the other for exercising/lap swimming. The health club offers a fitness center with aerobics classes, as well as a spa tub and sauna. The men's section also has a steam room.
Shamian Island is a quiet residential area with limited traffic. Its tree-lined streets and riverside promenade provide good walking and jogging venues. Locals also do their exercises and tai chi early in the morning, and there is a children's playground. Several tennis courts are available for hire. The Guangzhou Luhu Golf and Country Club is 7.5 km (4.6 miles) from the hotel. Visits can be arranged through the hotel and cost RMB 300–500 (US$37–$62) per round per person for nine holes, RMB 350–600 (US$44–$72) for 18 holes (including the green fee, but not cart and caddie). Baiyun International Airport (CAN): Approximate travel time is 45 minutes and distance is 39 km (24 miles).
Getting there: Taxis are the best way to get from the airport to the hotel, and the White Swan provides a shuttle bus and also has a fleet of private cars to pick guests up at the airport. Rental cars are not recommended for travelers unfamiliar with this area. Click the links below for instructions/details.
Getting around: The most convenient way to get around is by taxi, although the fare can easily mount in Guangzhou's traffic jams. Flagfall is RMB7 for the first 2 km (US$1 for the first 1.25 miles), RMB3 per km (US$0.50 per 0.6 miles) thereafter up to 15 km (9 miles), and then RMB3.9 per km (US$0.50 per 0.6 miles). The hotel provides a free shuttle bus to Guangzhou East Station, which leaves the hotel every hour between 7 AM and 8 PM. The White Swan also has a comprehensive transportation service of minivans and Mercedes cars, with tariffs depending on vehicle type, distance, and time. A single trip is RMB6–8 per kilometer (US$1–$5 per 0.6 miles), four hours and 60 km (37 miles) costs RMB600–1200 (US$75–$150) and eight hours and 120 km (75 miles) costs RMB 1500–2400 (US$190–$300). Two subway lines run across the city, with destinations in English and Chinese; a single ticket costs RMB3 (US$0.50). The nearest subway stop to the White Swan is Huang Sha, about a 0.5-km (0.3-mile) walk from the hotel, on a line that runs past some of Guangzhou's best tourist sights and terminates at Guangzhou East Station.
