Recreation

Shamian Island, 1.7 km (1 mile) from the hotel, is a quiet residential area with limited traffic. Its tree-lined streets and riverside promenade provide good walking and jogging venues. Getting around: The most convenient way to get around is by taxi, although the fare can easily mount in Guangzhou's traffic jams. Standard rate is RMB7 for the first 2 km (US$1 for the first 1.25 miles), RMB3 per km (US$0.50 per 0.6 miles) thereafter up to 15 km (9 miles), and then RMB4 per kilometer (US$0.50 per 0.6 miles). Two subway lines operate across the city, with destination signs in English and Chinese. A single ticket costs RMB3 (US$0.50). The nearest subway stop to the Furama is Haizhu Guangshan, about a half-km (third-mile) walk from the hotel, on a line that runs north past some of Guangzhou's best tourist sights (including the Temple of the Six Banyans and Yuexiu Park) and terminates at Guangzhou Station.
