Travel Details

Beau Rivage Geneva

Hotel Information: Since 1865, royalty, diplomats and stars have been dazzled by the five-floor atrium that lies at the core of this corner block hotel. The Mayer family originally built it as their private residence and they still run the hotel today. Tall marble columns, voluptuous statuary, a twinkling fountain and recently restored frescoes greet business people, VIPs, and couples on a romantic getaway. Sotheby's thought highly enough of the hotel to establish its Swiss HQ here in 1987.

Amenity highlights: Guests can choose from seven elegant meeting rooms (including a film-set ballroom) to run meetings and events. The Masaryk room retains the furnishings and porcelain of what was the Mayer family dining room. In 2003, the hotel installed a Cisco Systems high-speed Internet network in all conference rooms, which can hold a total of 1,200 people.

Insider tip: Local gourmands in the know try to book a seat at the chef's table in the sprawling hotel kitchens. Just eight lucky people get to slip through the restaurants and out the back to this fascinating setting. While an army of cooks and assistants cook up meals for the hotel restaurants, the head chef of the Chat Botté restaurant prepares a surprise menu and personally caters to his 'chosen' eight.

Decor and style change from room to room, but the trend is for light colors and antiques. A complimentary basket of sweets is arranged on the occasional table. Property Amenities

The hotel has seven elegant meeting rooms, including a grand ballroom fit for a 19th-century royal drama. The ballroom foyer alone, with its magnificent ceiling fresco and chandelier, is breathtaking. Sotheby's thought highly enough of the hotel as a place to do business to establish its Swiss HQ here in 1987.

Each room is named after a famous event or personality. The Windsor room commemorates the sale at auction by Sotheby's of the Duchess of Windsor's jewels. The Masaryk room is named after the first president of Czechoslovakia, created after WWI in 1918. It retains the furnishings and porcelain of what was the Mayer family dining room. In 2003 the hotel installed a Cisco Systems high-speed Internet network in all conference rooms, which can hold a total of 1,200 people.

Dining

Le Chat Botté - Featuring contempory and creative French gourmet cooking, this is the hotel's main restaurant. The tables can accomodate around 60 diners (with up to 20 in a separate, private room) all illuminated by daylight from the lakeside windows. In summer guests can enjoy a buffet breakfast on the garden terrace overlooking the lake. At lunch and dinner, the ever-changing menu is accompanied by fine wines from a century-old cellar and a selection of rare cheeses to finish off. The chef's table seats up to eight people; places should be reserved in advance. Open Monday through Friday, as well as Saturday evening.

Patara - Considered one of the best Thai restaurants in Geneva, the Patara can seat up to 45 diners. Access is from the hotel or the street. Green is the theme color, complemented by rich wood paneling. Tempting exotic spicy dishes include a chicken and shrimp satay with a green papaya salad. Open for lunch and dinner.

Bar L'Atrium - Just off the atrium is the bar, which continues the grand theme of the atrium itself, with high ceilings, chandeliers, candelabras, mirrors, sculpture-topped fireplace, and whimsical statuary. Guests take up position on high stools at the long marble bar or relax in the plush lounges and armchairs that spread into an terrace looking onto the lakeside boulevard. In the evening a pianist adds a musical note to the hum of cocktail chatter. Light meals and snacks are also available. Open from 10 AM to 1 PM.
