Hotel Information: Unassuming sliding doors usher guests in from a typical busy Florentine street into the airy lobby. The low-lit space is flanked by Ionic columns which support a vaulted ceiling and arched passageways. Sandstone-toned walls and earthy red marble floors blend with brown leather seating and colourful scatter cushions, where international leisure travellers plan their day’s sightseeing.

Amenity highlights: Over the summer months guests can unwind the hotel garden, relaxing under the shade of a tree by the pond, sunbathing among magnolias and wisterias, or cooling off in the outdoor pool. The restaurant terrace also opens out during warmer weather and the poolside bar opens for guests to take cocktails on the lawn.

Insider tip: Adjacent to the hotel is the Officina Profumo Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella one of the oldest pharmacies in the world dating back to 1221 when it was established by the Dominican Fathers. The interior is a spectacular blend of art and furnishings from through the centuries, and the air is thick with the scent of the hundreds of traditionally-made and naturally- produced essences, pomades and balms on sale.

Rooms

The Croce Di Malta Hotel features 98 guestrooms spread over its four floors, all accessible via two lifts. No two rooms are identical, however they are all characterized by a mixture of rustic, dark wood tables, antique-style furniture and heavy drapery covering long windows with wooden-slatted shutters. Views are either over the street or the gardens; several rooms include small balconies. Original art pieces decorate the walls.

All rooms provide 21” televisions with satellite channels and pay movies; infrared keyboards for TV Internet and PlayStation games consoles are also available (surcharge). Tiled bathrooms include showers or shower/tubs, together with wall-mounted hair dryers and complimentary toiletry sets.

Ristorante Il Coccodrillo - Atmospherically-lit dining room serving a menu specialising in Italian cuisine to a mixture of hotel guests and passing locals.
