Hotel Information: Small boats pick up the mainly Australian and New Zealand couples and families, as well as some UK and North American visitors. Guests are greeted by Fijian singers and escorted onto the beach and through to the small reception desk. The swimming pool lies to one side, the restaurants to another, while the guestrooms bures are scattered throughout the gardens and along the beach.

Insider tip:The first settlers in the Fijian Islands came to Viseisei, on the mainland opposite Malolo Island, in about 1500 BC. They believed Malolo was a place created by the gods where the sun came to rest each night after its daytime journey – hence the sun logo of Malolo Island Resort. Leilani’s Spa uses local Pure Fiji products, based on nut and floral extracts combined with coconut milk or oil.
Rooms
Guest bures at the Malolo Island Resort have vaulted ceilings with ceiling fans, as well as air-conditioning. Guestrooms are decorated with black-and-white photos. There is a king bed or two single beds, as well as a further two single beds that also act as day sofas. Two cane armchairs flank a coffee table. Desks have stools and lamps. There are refrigerators with tea/coffee kettles, irons and ironing boards, and hair dryers. Patios have chairs and table, as well as hammocks. Recreation
Malolo Island Resort has a swimming pool over two levels, connected by a cascade. The upper level is reserved for adults only, and has an adjacent spa tub and swim-up bar. Complimentary water-based activities include catamarans, windsurfing, kayaks, and snorkelling off the beach. There is also table tennis, croquet, petanques, beach volleyball, and rugby and soccer on the beach. Other activities, arranged at a surcharge, are banana boating, fishing, knee-boarding, wakeboarding, jet skiing, parasailing, scuba diving, water skiing, and boat tours.
Several hiking trails can be accessed from the resort. The Denarau Golf and Racquet Club is on Denarau Island, one hour by boat from the resort. It has an 18-hole championship golf course and driving range, six grass tennis courts, and four lighted synthetic courts. Green fees (including shared cart, tees and course guide) are FJ$110 (AU$82) or FJ$55 (AU$42) for juniors. Both golf and tennis lessons are available.

Malolo Island Resort has 49 bures scattered through a landscaped garden and along the beach. There are two main restaurant venues and two further bars. The resort offers a complimentary kids’ club, and full-service health spa. A swimming pool over two levels, and private beach, offer a wide range of complimentary water sports. An air-conditioned lounge has stereo, TV, DVD player (with complimentary DVD selection), small library, board games, and chess table. A family bure can be converted to a meeting venue for 30 guests, and business services are available through reception. There is a broadband Internet kiosk in the boutique, which costs F$8 (AU$6) per ten minutes. The boutique sells handicrafts and souvenirs, clothing, snacks and drinks, sunscreen, and other basic amenities. There is also a day room for use of guests.

Nadi International Airport (NAN): Approximate travel time is 90 minutes and distance is 25 km.
Getting there: The most practical way of getting to Malolo Island Resort is by taxi to Denarau Port and then catamaran ferry. Seaplanes can also fly the route in 15 minutes at a cost of FJ$193 (AU$145) one way. After-hours transfers by private speedboat charter cost FJ$350 (AU$262). Getting around:From Malolo Island Resort, guests must use boat charters or the local catamaran ferry to Denarau Port in order to access land-based transportation. This costs FJ$73 (AU$55) one way and departs from Denarau at 9 AM, noon and 3 PM, and from Malolo at 11 AM, 2 PM and 4 PM. Taxis or rental cars are the most reliable way of getting around the mainland, although there is also a network of long-distance and local buses. Few taxis have metres, so the fare must be settled at the start of the journey.
By ferryTravel time from the airport to the hotel: 90 minutes
Approximate cost (subject to change without notice): FJ$35 (AU$26) for taxi to Denarau Port, then FJ$73 (AU$55) one way for ferry.
Schedules and directions (subject to change without notice): Local catamaran ferry departs from Denarau Port at 9 AM, noon and 3 PM and takes one hour; the noon ferry, which goes via other islands, takes two hours. Tickets are purchased from the South Sea Cruises desk at the port.
Know Before You Go
Pets (other than seeing-eye dogs) are not permitted at Malolo Island Resort. Smoking is not permitted in guestrooms, although guests may smoke on outdoor balconies or patios. Tipping is not generally expected in Fiji, which has a reputation for friendliness and hospitality, although guests are welcome to tip for outstanding service.
There are no lifeguards on duty at the swimming pools or beach. Adults should remain with children under 12 years of age at all times.
Check-in time is 2 PM. Please note that early arrivals by boat are unlikely to be able to access guestrooms before this time, owing to the schedule for returning boats carrying departing guests.
Malolo Island Resort positions itself as a relaxing getaway from the stresses of the modern world. Guestrooms have no telephone, TV, radio, Internet access, or mobile phone coverage. There is intermittent mobile phone coverage on parts of the island, and a landline on which guests may make telephone calls at reception.
