Travel Details

The Fairmont Hotel Macdonald

Hotel Information: This stately hotel overlooking the North Saskatchewan River originally opened in 1915. Closed for complete restoration in the 1980s, it now offers discriminating business travelers and vacationers modern amenities in a genuinely historic setting. Protective gargoyles perch on the hotel’s limestone façade; the lobby’s marble reception desk has welcomed visiting queens and kings.

Amenity highlights: The 24-hour business center has computers with printers and high-speed Internet access (surcharge). Complimentary health club amenities include a 12-m (40-ft) indoor saline pool, kids' wading pool, spa tub, steam room, and sauna.

Insider tip: Edmonton is famous for the indoor pedways and connecting malls that help people endure the city’s legendary “eight months of winter.” But no matter what the weather, an outdoor pulse still exists on Rice Howard Way, a block-long pedestrian strip of pubs and cafés that attracts a mixed crowd of vacationers, business travelers, and locals (two blocks away).
