Casa De Campo

Hotel Information: A mini-country unto itself, the 7,000-acre Casa de Campo includes 1,500 private vacation homes for wealthy Americans and Dominicans, one of Latin America's principal polo complexes, three golf courses, a shooting club, an equestrian center, a marina village, and a replication of a 16th-century Italian village. Rolling terrain features extensive gardens, and fruits and vegetables for resort restaurants.

Amenity highlights: Running a quarter-mile along the Caribbean Sea, a beach dotted with palm trees leads to a sand-bottom swimming and water-sports area protected by an artificial reef. Centrally located near guestrooms within the resort's main-building area, two large pools occupy a two-level complex divided by a gentle waterfall. The lower pool offers shade cabanas and a large swim-up bar. The upper pool leads to a thatch-roof, wood-deck dining area that shades the swim-up bar below.

Insider tip: By complimentary touring cart or rented bicycle, exploring the private villa complexes—where professional baseball stars Sammy Sosa and Alex Rodriguez and many others have vacation homes—is a fascinating tour.

Rooms

The main resort area in 7,000-acre Casa de Campo offers 279 large guestrooms in one- and two-story Mediterranean-style buildings of white stucco with red-tile roofs and natural wood accents clustered near the main building/pool complex. Rooms feature balconies or ground-floor patios furnished with two cushioned rattan chairs and a dining table; terra-cotta tile floors; air conditioning; louvered doors and windows for fresh-air; and mahogany furniture, crown molding, and trim.

Cable television, wireless Internet access (surcharge), and Bose Wave radios provide entertainment. Each room includes a walk-in closet/dressing room and white-tile bathroom containing a tub/shower combination. A marble-vanity area separates closet and bathroom. Each room's entrance contains a long marble counter with coffeemaker atop a cabinet housing a minibar.

Three- and four-bedroom villas have patios with private spa tubs.

Recreation

The resort includes three 18-hole golf courses designed by Pete Dye. Ranked number one in the Caribbean by Golf Magazine, the championship Teeth of the Dog features seven holes skirting the Caribbean Sea. Situated inland, the resort layout Links course features hilly terrain reminiscent of Scotland. Opened in 2003, another resort layout, Dye Fore, includes views of both the Caribbean and, from high bluffs, the Chavón River.

Other recreational facilities include a Shooting Center for skeet, trap, and sporting-clay shooting; a Dude Ranch for horseback and pony rides; 13 tennis courts (10 lighted); and a water-sports center on the beach offering snorkeling gear, kayaks, sailboats, Hobie Cats, windsurfers, Aqua Cycles, and banana-boat rides. A beach hut lends complimentary balls, games, and beach toys. Waterskiing is available on the Chavón River, and deep-sea fishing charters from the Casa de Campo Marina.

Property Amenities

Built high above the Chavón River, Altos de Chavón replicates a 16th-century Italian village hand-constructed out of rock, stone, iron, wood, and cobblestones. The village is dedicated to the arts and includes an art school and galleries, shops, restaurants, a disco, and a church that was dedicated by the Pope. Shows are held periodically in a 5,000-seat amphitheater, the site of concerts by many Latin American stars. Complimentary shuttles transport guests to the village.

Designed by an Italian architect to resemble an Italian seaside village, the resort's marina includes shops, boutiques, a supermarket, and restaurants arrayed around a central plaza facing a yacht harbor.

A complimentary children's/teens center offers computer games, Internet-connected computers, pool tables, board games, CDs, karaoke, and outdoor volleyball. For fees, supervised children's activities are also available, with sessions for ages 1–3, 4–7, 8–12, and 13-17.

Other facilities and services include Cygalle Healing Spa; a fitness center; shops and a bank in the main complex; and a business center. Complimentary activities include bingo and merengue lessons by the pool. For-fee activities include moonlight riverboat cruises on the Chavón River, sunset catamaran cruises from the marina, and an archeological lecture/tour of caves containing indigenous drawings.
