The Oxford Hotel

Hotel Information: Opened in 1891 and fully restored a century later, this genteel hotel in Denver's historical district appeals to affluent leisure and business travelers who appreciate its atmosphere and personalized service. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the five-story hotel features English and French antiques, marble floors, frescoed walls, stained glass, sterling chandeliers, and collections of Colorado art.

Amenity highlights: Guests sip complimentary coffee in the morning and sherry in the evening in the hotel's grand lobby, which houses antiques, art, and an orange canary named Casey. McCormick's Fish House and Il Fornaio offer seafood and Tuscan-inspired fare for lunch or dinner, while the Art Deco Cruise Room is the place to enjoy drinks or late-night nibbles.

Insider tip: The Wynkoop Brewing Company—Colorado’s oldest brewpub—is 1 block from the hotel on 18th Street, between Wynkoop and Wazee streets. Housed in LoDo’s historic J.S. Brown Mercantile Building, the 32,000-square-foot pub and pool hall is also the venue for an improv comedy troupe.

Dining

McCormick's Fish House and Bar - Daily seafood specials are served for lunch and dinner weekdays in the wood-paneled dining room. Saturday lunch is served in the adjacent lounge, a lively bar frequented by locals and businesspeople. McCormick's Sunday brunch is also popular.

The Cruise Room - This sophisticated bar opened to much hoopla the day after Prohibition was repealed, and was renovated in 1933 to resemble a lounge on RMS Queen Mary. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it remains a popular downtown institution. Genuine Art-Deco decor and wall panels depict light-hearted "toasts" from around the world. Open late, serving from a full bar and upscale pub menu.

Il Fornaio Cucina Italiana - Murals of the Italian countryside and wood panels decorate this restaurant, which serves lunch and dinner from a menu that highlights a different Italian town or region each month. Coffee, pastries, and sandwiches are offered each morning in the bakery.
