Hotel Information: A Italian-style townhouse first built in 1899, and now with a modern extension at the rear, The Classic Villa is painted in pink and cream and has landscaped patio area and flowerbeds. Insider tip:The beach town of Sumner started life as a holiday resort but is now a suburb of Christchurch. It is well worth heading 30 minutes to Sumner, whose hillsides are dotted with cosy holiday houses and prime real estate. Restaurants and cafés provide a village feel, while in summer beach volleyball and surfing make the beach a lively venue. There are also superb views of the coast and city.

Instructions/details: Guests intending to arrive out of reception hours must contact the hotel at least 24 hours prior to arrival in order to acquire a late check-in security code for the front door. Guestroom keys and instructions can be picked up in an envelope on the reception counter inside. Hotel contact information will be included in the reservation confirmation.
Rooms
Eight of the 12 guestrooms at The Classic Villa are located in the historical part of the villa, which was built in the 1800s. Guestrooms feature polished timber floors and ornate plaster ceilings, and have wood-fire effect heaters. A more modern, second-level extension holds four more guestrooms. All guestrooms feature desks with stools and complimentary wireless Internet access. Bedside tables have telephones (with free local calls) and clock radios. Cable/satellite TVs offer premium channels such as Sky Sport, Sky News, and Sky Movies. Other amenities include irons and ironing boards, in-room safes, and slippers. Recreation
Guests may use the fitness centre at the YMCA, one block away, without paying membership fees. Single visits cost NZ$10 (AU$8). The centre also offers aerobics, yoga, and Pilates classes.
Hagley Park, which starts 200 metres from The Classic Villa, offers tennis and lawn bowling clubs, cycling, jogging, a children’s playground, and a fitness course. Punting on the Avon River (300 metres) is an iconic Christchurch pastime. Note that cycling is an easy way to get around this flat city, with many designated cycle lanes, especially in the northwest of the city. There are several bicycle rental companies in town; bicycles cost about NZ$35 (AU$32) per day. Mountain biking is offered from the top of the Gondola (7 km). Other city activities include ice skating, sky diving, and windsurfing. Swimming is at Centennial Pool (1 km). There are numerous golf courses near the city, including the scenic Terrace Downs High Country Resort, where green fees are NZ$115 (AU$105), or the Clearwater Golf Club, where fees are NZ$125 (AU$115). Horse riding and mountain biking is available in the Port Hills. The three main beaches nearest Christchurch are Sumner Beach, New Brighton Beach, and Taylor's Mistake, all of which have good surfing. There are several ski fields within two hours of the city.

Getting there: The best way to Classic Villa is by airport shuttle bus or taxi. Car rentals are available online. Click the links below for instructions/details.
Getting around: Several taxis companies service Christchurch. A free yellow shuttle bus operates around the city centre every 10 minutes during the day or every 15 minutes in the evening, stopping at Casino, Town Hall, Victoria Square, Cathedral Square, City Mall, South City, Smiths City, and Moorehouse Avenue. Stops are designated by yellow posts; the nearest to The Classic Villa is Cathedral Square, two blocks away. There is a single tram line, which runs directly past The Classic Villa, with a stop across the road. Downtown Christchurch also has a good network of public buses that operate from the Bus Exchange at the intersection of Colombo and Litchfield Streets, less than 1 km from The Classic Villa. The cost of a ticket depends on the zones travelled, but ranges from NZ$2 (AU$1.60) to NZ$6 (AU$4.80). The Red Bus Explore Christchurch Day Pass is NZ$7 (AU$5.60). There is also a City Circuit Bus that runs past many of the city's tourist attractions. It departs from Cathedral Square and costs NZ$22 (AU$20.10). Driving directions from Christchurch International Airport (CHC): From the airport terminal, go straight through the roundabout and onto Memorial Avenue, which becomes Fendalton Road. Continue along Fendalton Road, and as this crosses the railway line, take the left hand lane. Turn left into Harper Avenue and move into the right lane. Turn right at the lights onto Park Terrace and continue until you reach Worcester Boulevard. Turn right into Worcester Boulevard. The Classic Villa is the pink house on the left hand side of the street, opposite the Court Theatre.
