The Pump Room, inspired by a popular social establishment of the same name in 18th century England, opened at the Ambassador East Hotel in 1938. Chicago’s socialites used to sit along The Pump Room's western wall to watch the celebrities often seated in "Booth One," including John Barrymore, Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Robert Wagner, Natalie Wood, and Liza Minelli. Booth One still has a working phone which was used by celebrities to conduct business. Today, The Pump Room remains a Chicago landmark and a popular spot for movie stars.
