Hotel Information: The three-storey atrium lobby of the Pacific International Cairns is decorated in wood, glass, and marble, and is flooded with light from large, floor-to-ceiling windows. Tapa of beaten mulberry bark from New Guinea, hang on the walls. The restaurants and café lie to the right, and a small shop sits by the lifts, where Japanese, North American, and Australian guests pass to and fro.
Insider tip: Before land reclamation, this hotel used to be on the waterfront, hence the name of its dining venue, the Waterfront Restaurant. Rusty's Market off Grafton Street is an authentic shopping experience. Run by Hmong immigrants from Cambodia and Vietnam, it offers fruit and vegetables, as well as crafts and leather. Grafton Street is also considered to have some of the city's best coffee shops.

The Pacific International Hotel has an outdoor swimming pool and solar-heated spa tub.
Cairns has a wide variety of sporting and water activities. The Esplanade (directly outside) has jogging and biking tracks, tennis courts (1 km), and the Cairns Esplanade Swimming Lagoon (200 metres), a 4,800-square-metre saltwater pool with sandy beaches and a dedicated children’s area. Cairns CBD has several health clubs that offer classes in aerobics, Pilates, and yoga. Water sports such as jet skiing, motor boating, and parasailing can be arranged through the hotel or at the various operators at the Pier Shopping Centre or Reef Fleet Terminal across the street. Helicopter sightseeing is available at the aviation terminal (8 km). Waterskiing and wakeboarding on fixed cables can be enjoyed at Smithfield, 18 km north of Cairns. This is also the location of the Cairns Golf Club, which has a driving range. Rafting can be enjoyed on the Barron River, a 20minute drive away.

The Pacific International Cairns has 176 guestrooms and suites in an 11-storey building overlooking the Esplanade. It offers three dining venues, and has a range of conference facilities, including a ballroom and various smaller meeting and function rooms. An outdoor swimming pool is complemented by a solar-heated spa tub. The hotel has coin-operated laundries on three of its floors. The Grand Pacific Ballroom is 285 square metres and can accommodate 360 people in theatre style, or 250 in classroom style. The ballroom can be separated into two venues; the Tradewinds Room (150 square metres) and the Islander Room (60 square metres). The Joseph Conrad Room is 60 square metres, hosting 60 in theatre style or 40 in classroom style. A final venue, the 215-square-metre Pacific Harbour Room, holds 100 guests for cocktails and has a small museum of local artefacts.

Cairns International Airport (CNS): Approximate travel time is 10 minutes and distance is 8 km.
Getting there: Taxis, and an airport shuttle bus service that will drop you at the Pacific International Hotel on request, are the easiest means of transport. Car rentals are available online.
Getting around: Cairns city centre is relatively compact and contains everything of interest to most visitors, so walking is a convenient option. There is a taxi service. Taxis can sometimes be hard to find on the street, but are usually found at the nearest hotel. Public buses in Cairns depart from City Place Mall where Lake Street and Shield Street intersect, but buses can be hailed from anywhere along the route, providing there is a convenient place for drivers to stop. Buses head both north and south, through the suburbs and onwards along the coast. Tickets are bought on board.

Driving directions from Cairns International Airport (CNS): Exiting the airport, follow Airport Drive to the T intersection and turn left onto the Captain Cook Highway. This leads directly into Cairns centre, where it becomes Sheridan Street. Turn left into Spence Street and continue for four blocks. The hotel is on the left, on the corner of Spence Street and The Esplanade.
Know Before You Go
Pets (other than seeing-eye dogs) are not permitted at the Pacific International Cairns. Under Queensland state laws, smoking is not permitted in restaurants and public areas of the hotel. There is no wheelchair access to the hotel’s Executive Boardroom, Joseph Conrad meeting room, or the upstairs dining section at Monsoons restaurant. All other areas of the property (including the downstairs dining section of Monsoons) are wheelchair accessible.
Box and Irukandji jellyfish are prevalent in coastal areas of Far North Queensland between the months of November and April, when swimming in the ocean is not advised. During this time, stinger nets are set up in some areas to provide safe swimming. Extra care is also required at any time because of possible strong currents, rips, and saltwater crocodiles. Visitors should swim only at designated Life Saving patrol areas.
